Client: Groundworks North East & Cumbria

Women in Science

It was a pleasure to spend a (very soggy) day with these ladies and the important work they are carrying out to monitor and improve soil health.

Groundworks NE and Cumbria are currently carrying out approximately 150 soil sampling points across the Wallington estate Northumberland, as part of the Wilder Wallington project. The aim is to obtain an overview of the soil’s condition and carbon storage to establish a baseline for future improvements across the project.

A visual evaluation of soil structure is carried out (VESS) and an earthworm count. The soil is then bagged up with the corresponding code, logged onto field maps app. The soil is then brought back, packaged up and sent off to the lab.
