An amazing project to document, completed with a quarter of a million pound funding from the Environment Agency and The Caterpillar Foundation.
This restoration of the salt marshes on the sides of the River Wear has been incredibly hard work for the team installing the chestnut brush fencing, all brought in by boat and completed by hand to minimise disturbance of the existing habitat, it was heavy, dirty work, the team grafted in the summer sun in full PPE, dry suits and buoyancy aids, wearing specialist mud boots to prevent them sinking in the silt. Incredibly hard work!
At completion the fencing will allow silt to be washed over the fence at high tide and retained there, gradually building up to create a habitat for plants, insects, birds, fish, otters and porpoises re instating the natural eco system.
